Students are suffering
Regarding “The shame of shuttered schools” ( Editorial, Dec. 4): I think of the professional sports and how they have managed to forge forward with their activities during this same time. While the school district’s decisionmakers report all the reasons why a return to the classroom during this pandemic is difficult and not very likely in the near future, team owners, working with league officials and health experts, came up with a bold, wellthoughtout plan, and then executed it.
Of course, I know this initiative is moneydriven as a canceled season would mean losing tens of millions. And rich team owners are not in the business of losing money. Which makes me wonder: If the jobs of the school board members and other key leaders in the school district, and/ or a large amount of their salary, were tied to their success in creating a returntoschool plan, would we see more urgency? Because these people lose nothing as schools remain shuttered, it’s only the students who suffer.
