Don’t blame the cows

-

Regarding “Consequence of cattle” ( Letters, Dec. 8): Cattle only produce methane gas because they eat corn. Grassfed cows/ bison do not cause a pollution problem. The good people of this country really need to try and understand just how horrible the United States government has been these past 100 years. They subsidized the corn industry/ farmers and when they had a huge surplus of corn they came up with a whole bunch of ways to use it.

One of those ways was feeding it to cows. The cow’s stomach has four valves and cannot process anything but grass. So when the cows eat corn/ grain products their stomachs release methane from both ends. Stop blaming the cows — blame the farmers and more specifically the federal government for this problem.

And if you want to be part of the solution, start eating locally raised grassfed beef. It’s healthier, by far, than grainfinished cows ( way more omega3s), and it’s much better for the soil and the environment.
