Kuhse sparks Gaels to fifth straight win

Senior guard Tommy Kuhse had game highs of 24 points and five assists to lead St. Mary’s to its fifth straight win, a 7361 decision over UTEP in Moraga on Tuesday night.

Kuhse went 10for18 from the floor and hit all four of his foul shots. He added five rebounds and two steals.

St. Mary’s ( 51) used a 140 run midway through the first half to turn a 1211 deficit into a 2512 advantage. The Gaels stayed in front the rest of the way.

Guard Souley Boum, an Oakland Tech alum who began his college career at USF, led the Miners ( 21) with 21 points.

# 3 Iowa 93, # 16 North Carolina 80: Luka Garza had 16 points and 14 rebounds as the host Hawkeyes ( 40) subdued the Tar Heels ( 32). Garza’s streak of scoring at least 20 points ended at 19 games.

# 5 Kansas 73, # 8 Creighton 72: Jalen Wilson hit the goahead 3pointer with 42 seconds remaining, then watched as Marcus Zegarowski missed the last of three foul shots after fouling him with 1.1 seconds left, allowing the host Jayhawks ( 51) to edge the Bluejays ( 31).

# 6 Illinois 83, # 10 Duke 68: Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points and the visiting Illini ( 41) stopped the Blue Devils ( 22).

# 12 Tennessee 56, Colorado 47: After five pandemicre­lated postponeme­nts, the host Vols ( 10) won their opener, downing the Buffaloes ( 21).

Penn State 75, # 15 Virginia Tech 55: Izaiah Brockingto­n scored a careerhigh 24 points for the Nittany Lions ( 31), who put together a 170 run early in the first half. The Hokies ( 41) had won 34 straight nonconfere­nce home games.

# 21 Rutgers 79, Syracuse 69: Ron Harper Jr. scored 26 points and the host Scarlet Knights ( 40) snapped a 13game losing streak against Syracuse ( 31) with their first victory over the Orange since January 2003.

# 22 Ohio State 90, Notre Dame 85: E. J. Liddell led five Ohio State players in double figures with 19 points as the visiting Buckeyes ( 40) rallied from 11 points down in the second half and held off the Irish ( 12). Former Cal swingman Justice Sueing had 16 points for Ohio State.

USC 91, UC Irvine 56: Freshman Evan Mobley had 22 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as the host Trojans ( 41) routed the Anteaters ( 23).

Utah 75, Idaho State 59: Freshman Pelle Larsson scored 14 points to lead six Utah players in doublefigu­re scoring and the host Utes ( 20) beat the Bengals ( 04).

WOMEN

Utah 85, # 15 Oregon State 79: Brynna Maxwell went 10for15 from the floor and 10for10 at the line in a 34point performanc­e that lifted the visiting Utes ( 11, 11 Pac12) over the Beavers ( 31, 11).

# 25 Gonzaga 89, Wyoming 50: Jenn Wirth had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the visiting Zags ( 22) overwhelme­d the Cowgirls ( 11).
