The coronavirus pandemic has put Tara VanDerveer’s pursuit of history on hold.

Citing coronavirus protocols, Stanford on Tuesday announced that Friday night’s women’s basketball game against UC Davis has been canceled.

The Cardinal ( 30) moved into the No. 1 spot in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll and the Stanford head coach is one shy of tying Tennessee’s Pat Summitt for the most wins ( 1,098) in the history of women’s college basketball .

Had Stanford beaten UC Davis on Friday, VanDerveer’s first shot at breaking the record would have come Sunday against Cal at Haas Pavilion. As it stands now, the Cal game could bring VanDerveer even with Summit with a potential recordbreaker scheduled for Dec. 19 at USC.

The cancellation is not a surprise, given the ban on contact sports issued by Santa Clara County late last month.

“The decision was made in accordance with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s emergency directive issued on Nov. 28, along with a pause of competition by UC Davis women’s basketball to remain compliant with Yolo County health orders,” Stanford said in a statement.

The cancellation is the third of this corona virus altered season, following calledoff games against Pacific ( Nov. 29) and San Diego ( Nov. 30). In addition, Stanford’s game against Washington State — which was to be played Tuesday in Las Vegas — has been postponed and a makeup date yet to be announced.
