Born in San Francisco September 27,1948 - died at home February 10, 2021. First born son of Joe and Katie Ryan; oldest child of the seven Ryan siblings. Survived by Jessica and Bill Goglin, Rosemary and Tom Barry, Tim and Karen Ryan, Mary Catherine Ryan, Joanne and Dave Pino.

Preceded in death by Katie and Joe Ryan, and youngest sister, Virginia.

Survived by 12 loving nieces and nephews, and 15 great nieces and nephews.

Catholic school educated, St Thomas Moore, Our Lady of Mercy , St Paul of Shipwreck, St Elizabeth and Sacred Heart HS. Voted all city quarterbac­k and player of the year at Sacred Heart HS. 1966 Fall semester, Joe attended UC Berkeley in August 1967 , Joe served his country by enlisting in the US Army.

He attended the Defense Language Institute at Fort Ord , located in Monterey CA. Prior to deployment to Vietnam, he was sent to Fort Bliss, Texas for further training at the Vietnamese Language School as a member of the Army Security Agency. Joe served 2 tours of duty 1969 – 1971 with honorable discharge.1972 1977 Joe attended SF City College, and was quarterbac­k on the football team. Then on to Humboldt State, he obtained history degree while working in Lumber Industry.1978 – Joe returned to SF Bay area, joined friend in business venture.1979 -2001 Joe was employed by US Post Office. In 1987 he was promoted to rank of Sgt of Police Inspection Services within US Post Office. 2002 – 2014 Joe joined SF Unified School District as a Substitute Teacher. Joe retired in 2014, enjoyed traveling, gambling trips, concerts, family celebratio­ns. Joe loved his big family and reading was his passion. He was a big fan of all SF Bay Area Sports. He was a humble man and heroically fought through many health issues related to exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
