Sorenstam makes LPGA cut; Koepka leads WGC

-

Annika Sorenstam went more than 12 years without playing on the LPGA Tour. Now she gets two more days.

The Hall of Famer made three birdies after making the turn Friday and posted a 1underpar 71 in the Gainbridge LPGA in Orlando and made the cut on the number.

“I did what I could,” Sorenstam said. “The goal was to shoot under par and I did, and so that’s all I can do.”

She still was 12 shots out of the lead as Lydia Ko posted a 3under 69 and took a oneshot lead over Nelly Korda (68).

Sorenstam, 50, is making a onetime appearance because the LPGA Tour is at her home course. She retired after a threewin season in 2008 to start a family.

⏩ Brooks Koepka hit one his worst tee shots of the day that barely cleared the water on the 15th hole. That turned out to be the start of three straight birdies that led to a 6under 66 and a oneshot lead in the World Golf Championships’ Workday Championship in Bradenton, Fla.

Coming off two missed cuts, Koepka won the Phoenix Open to end an 18month drought. And now he’s starting to hit his stride with the first major of the year creeping up quickly.

He was at 11under 133, with a oneshot lead over Cameron Smith (67), Billy Horschel (67) and PGA champion Collin Morikawa, the Cal alum who made up ground with six birdies over his last 10 holes.

Morikawa matched the low score of the tournament with a 64. The other 64 belonged to U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, who was 13 shots better than in his opening round to sit eight strokes back.

⏩ Former Stanford player Brandon Wu birdied the final two holes for a 5under 67 and the secondround lead at 11under 133 in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open in Rio Grande. ⏩ Phil Mickelson waded into the mud after his tee shot on Tucson (Ariz.) National’s 15th hole trickled into a pond and made birdie, highlighting a 3under 70 at the Cologuard Classic, putting him in contention for a third straight victory to open his PGA Tour Champions career.

Mickelson was four shots behind Mike Weir, who had a bogeyfree 66.
