Relocate Ferris wheel
Regarding “S.F. supervisors’ killjoy caucus” (Feb. 28): I was dismayed by your editorial Sunday trivializing the opposition to the Ferris wheel and calling out our supervisors for “meddling,” which is exactly what supervisors are supposed to do. Further, people should be concerned about the impact on owls and other wildlife, and residents in a quiet neighborhood have every right to oppose noise and flashing lights after dark. These are real, complex issues, deserving careful review, as does determining what the ambience of our park should be: a sanctuary that encourages us to disconnect from devices and enjoy nature and outdoor play, or an amusement park with an expensive, flashy, modern ride with strobe lights?
For me, the answer is clear: I lived at the foot of the park for years, and it served as my natural sanctuary during daily walks. The park has traditionally hosted noisy onetime free events such as concerts, but never permanent fixtures like this.
How about the wheel runs during daytime for a year, then is relocated to an area intended for ongoing events and crowds, such as Fisherman’s Wharf or China Basin?
