Include all the children
We are used to hearing about discrimination based on race or gender. But sometimes in San Francisco, it takes different forms. Regarding “Costly free camp sought to aid families” (March 1): The Chronicle reports that San Francisco Supervisors Hillary Ronen and Connie Chan, discussing summer programs for the city’s children, said all parents deserve some help after the turmoil of the past two school years. Very good; I appreciate it all: it’s inclusive, nondiscriminatory.
But then we read the program is not inclusive at all. It would serve only San Francisco children who go to certain schools. When did a child’s school become a criterion for eligibility for basic city services? No matter what schools children might attend — they’re all San Franciscans. What about kids who are homeschooled? They are, too. Past discriminatory practices were defended, righteously. We condemn them today. Can we recognize and rebuke today’s discriminatory policies as well? Please, when it comes to the children — include them all in your programs!
