Most of the Bay Area is expected to see light to moderate rainfall starting Friday night and lasting through Saturday afternoon as a weather system sweeps through the region, meteorologists said.

The weather system, which is coming from the Gulf of Alaska and “swinging through California as a trough,” is expected to bring roughly a quarter of an inch of rain to San Francisco and other lowelevation cities, and roughly half an inch up to an inch of rain to coastal mountain ranges, said Jeff Lorber, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office.

“Looks like most of the Bay Area will see at least a small amount of rain,” Lorber told The Chronicle on Tuesday. “It’s still a few days out so it’s tough to nail down the precise amounts, but I’d say a quarter of an inch is a good bet for most locations.”

The system will likely bring breezy conditions and could be “a little gusty,” Lorber said. Areas in the North Bay, such as Sonoma and Napa counties, will likely see 1 inch of rainfall and are “most likely to get the highest amounts,” Lorber said.

The bulk of the rainfall is expected on Friday night and Saturday morning, but Lorber said there could be lingering showers on Saturday afternoon. It will likely be dry through Sunday morning, when “another bout of showers” is possible, he said.

“As of now, there are no threats to any of the burn scar areas because rainfall rates look to be on the lighter side, so we don’t expect any flooding concerns,” he added.

Until Friday night, Lorber said Bay Area residents can expect dry, mild weather conditions, with temperatures in the 60s and low 70s for warmer, inland locations. Nighttime temperatures this week are expected to reach the 40s and 30s in inland locations, he said.
