The Bay Area may have been spoiled with several days of summerlike weather recently, but rain showers and chilly temperatures will make a comeback across the region this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The first chances of rainfall will creep in Monday morning, said Weather Service meteorologist Brayden Murdock.

“Then it starts becoming a bit more widespread as we head towards the evening,” he said. “Monday night going into Tuesday is probably going to be very consistent rain and some of our highest chances for the week.”

Murdock said the rain will be “pretty widespread” throughout the Bay Area, though higher elevations in coastal areas will get heavier rainfall, he said.

San Francisco is expected to get up to threequarters of an inch of rain over a threeday period. Higher elevations like the Santa Cruz Mountains may get more than 1.5 inches.

Though it’s going to be persistent rain, “we’re not really looking at heavy rainfall rates,” Murdock said. “We’re just going to get brief periods of moderate rainfall and cool conditions along with it.”

The rain system will keep daytime temperatures in the 50s, with overnight temperatures dipping into the 40s, Murdock said.

In Tahoe, wind gusts are expected to pick up Monday ahead of a moderate snow system that will likely bring snow to the Sierra crest and up to 4 inches in the Tahoe basin, said Marvin Boyd, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno.

“The storm track is just off the coast of California,” Boyd said. “That usually leads to lower precipitation amounts for parts of the Sierra crest. But if this moves a little more inland, we could see more snow in the Tahoe area.”

Travelers driving through Tahoe no longer need chain controls on their tires, Caltrans said over the weekend.

“All controls on I80 and U.S. 50 have been dropped! Safe travels!” the agency tweeted Saturday.
