Larson gets 1st win since his ban ended

-

At Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson raced to his first NASCAR victory since he was reinstated from a nearly yearlong suspension.

He ran just the first four races last season, then lost his job for using a racial slur while playing a video game early in the pandemic. Larson worked last year to rebuild his image and was hired by Hendrick Motorsports.

“I didn’t know if I’d ever have an opportunity to win a NASCAR race again,” said Larson, who gave a shoutout to team owner Rick Hendrick.

He celebrated his first career win on an intermediate track with a smokefilled burnout. Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only Black fulltime driver, was the first rival to congratulate him.

Brad Keselowski of Team Penske was second in a Ford, followed by hometown driver Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin in Toyotas for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Soccer: Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes converted a firstminute penalty, then got a secondhalf goal by Luke Shaw to beat host City 20 in the Manchester Derby. After a clubrecord 28 matches unbeaten, City missed out on catching the streak of 27 wins set by Welsh side The New Saints in 2016.

College baseball: Stanford (71) racked up 20 hits to win 1513 over USF at Benedetti Diamond and complete a fourgame sweep. Vincent Martinez was 4for7 with his first career home run and Brock Jones homered twice for the Cardinal. Jordan Vujovich homered as part of an 11run gametying fourth inning for the Dons (48).

⏩ A sixrun second inning by host St. Mary’s (66) led to an 83 win, denying a fourgame sweep for Cal (75). Darren Baker, Steven Zobac and John Lagattuta had two hits apiece for the Bears.

Tennis: Andrey Rublev won his fourth tour singles title in seven months, beating Marton Fucsovics 76 (4), 64 in the ABN AMRO Tournament final in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

⏩ Danish teenager Clara Tauson clinched her first career title in style, beating Viktorija Golubic 64, 61 to win the Lyon Open without dropping a set after two qualifying rounds.
