Vegas holds on despite late goal by Sharks’ Meier

The Golden Knights appeared to be rolling toward a shutout on home ice behind star goalie MarcAndré Fleury until the Sharks’ Timo Meier broke up the party with a goal at 14:29 of the third period to make the final score 21 in favor of Vegas.

Fleury, who came into Monday night’s game leading the NHL in save percentage, recorded 23 saves in the win.

For Vegas, Max Pacioretty scored at 8:35 in the first period. The margin of victory came off the stick of Mark Stone at 1:02 in the third period.

Capitals 6, Sabres 0: Alex Ovechkin matched Phil Esposito for sixth on the NHL list with his 717th goal as Washington won on the road.

Ovechkin scored in the third period, helping send the Capitals to their fifth straight win with his 1,299th career point — one shy of becoming the 35th player to reach 1,300.

He scored from the slot off a pass from former Sabre Conor Sheary, who found Ovechkin cutting toward the net. Ovechkin snapped a quick shot past Carter Hutton, who was screened.

Vitek Vanecek stopped 23 shots and improved to 401 against the Sabres. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, Richard Panik, Daniel Sprong and Garnet Hathaway also scored for Washington.

Penguins 4, Bruins 1: Evgeni Malkin scored on a power play for his 1,100th career point, leading Pittsburgh to the home victory. Malkin is the third Russiaborn player to reach 1,100 points in the NHL, joining Sergei Fedorov and Ovechkin.

Malkin has eight goals on the season and also had an assist while extending his point

streak to eight games.

Flyers 5, Rangers 4: Jakub Voracek scored 3:47 into overtime, sending visiting Philadelph­ia to the win.

Claude Giroux, Joel Farabee and Ivan Provorov each had a goal and an assist, and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Flyers, who won for the third time in eight games. Sean

Couturier and Voracek each had two assists, and Carter Hart finished with 20 saves.

Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists in the Rangers’ threegoal second period. Colin Blackwell, Julien Gauthier and Kevin Rooney also scored. Keith Kinkaid stopped 25 shots.

Panthers 6, Blackhawks 3:

Aleksander Barkov scored a tiebreakin­g, shorthande­d goal in the third period to send homestandi­ng Florida to its fourth consecutiv­e win.

Barkov poked in a loose puck from right in front with 6:34 left. It was the Panthers’ first shorthande­d goal this season.

Predators 4, Lightning 1:

Calle Jarnkrok had a shorthande­d goal and three assists, helping Nashville to the road win.

Canadiens 4, Jets 2:

Tyler Toffoli had two goals for Montreal, including an emptynette­r in the final minute on the road.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Josh Anderson also scored for the Canadiens. Carey Price, playing in his 700th game, made 34 saves.

Canucks 3, Senators 2:

J.T. Miller scored in overtime for Vancouver, and Thatcher Demko made 44 saves for the visitors.

Miller got his eighth of the season at 1:40. Jayce Hawryluk and Tanner Pearson scored in regulation for Vancouver.
