Anne Marie Hughes RN, PhD, FAAN

-

It is with profound heartache, we share the passing of our beloved Anne at home surrounded by family and friends on March 26, 2021.

Anne was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Anne was the eldest daughter of the late Bernard and Rose (Fleming) Hughes. Anne was a loving and devoted wife to Marylin, sister to Joan (Hughes) Collier, and sisterin-law to the late Christopher A. Collier. Anne was a cherished aunt to Rose Fleming Collier, Meredith Hughes Collier Cummings and her husband Stephen. She was a great-aunt to Claire Anne Cummings. Also, Anne was a devoted family member and friend.

During her 43 years of nursing practice, Anne was a Master clinician. Anne’s advice was sought by many. Her knowledge and calming demeanor were appreciated by all. Anne’s expertise as a leader led to her election as the National President of the American Nurses in HIV/ AIDS Care, and election to the National Board of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association. Anne’s selfless dedication to those who were suffering or marginalized in our society had a special place in her heart. In addition, Anne successfully mentored many nurses and other health care professionals.

Anne was the recipient of many prestigious awards including election as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Anne travelled nationally and internationally as an invited speaker on topics related to HIV/AIDS, and Hospice and Palliative care. Additionally, Anne was one of the three original editors of “Guidelines for Practice in HIV/AIDS Care”, plus many book chapters and peer reviewed journal articles.

Anne was a graduate of Gwynedd Mercy College, Boston College, and the University of Washington (Seattle). Anne completed her doctorate at the University of California, San Francisco.
