This time, it’s snow that idles the Mets

-

Another day, another postponement for the New York Mets.

The Mets were scheduled to play Friday in Denver, but the game was snowed out — the Mets’ seventh postponement this spring. Weather permitting, the Mets, who been limited to eight games thus far, will play the Rockies in two seveninning games Saturday.

The Mets saw three games postponed in early April because of the Nationals’ coronavirus outbreak, then three more in a stretch of rainy weather in New York this week. The Mets (53) did manage to make up one rainedout game against the Phillies.

“In the month of April, in history, there’s been some disruptions in playing,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said. “As far as the weather, I think we can find a way to be prepared. We just did it when we had the two (rainouts) . ... And we just won three games in a row against the Phillies.”

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor compared the team’s early schedule to spring training: They play a couple of games, then they’re off the next day. The Mets have played just one nineinning game this week, on Wednesday in a 51 win against the Phillies.

New York’s next full game isn’t until Sunday, if the weather accommodates the rest of their schedule in Denver.

“Whether it be the weather, COVID, we can’t really control those things,” Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said Wednesday. “You can’t really dwell on that. It’s been kind of a weird, rocky start, not because of our play but because of the inconsistency from outside factors that we can’t control.

“So I think the more that we can get blessings from the weather, and are allowed to play on a consistent basis, the more that other teams can stay healthy, the more consistent we’re going to be.”

Bellinger update: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that center fielder Cody Bellinger, on the injured list since April 9, has a hairline fracture in his left leg. The injury initially was labeled a left calf contusion.

“It’s not a daytoday thing,” Roberts told the Los Angeles Times.

Bellinger was hurt when A’s reliever Reymin Guduan accidentally stepped on Bellinger’s foot on a play at first base on April 6.

Medical report: Former Giants lefthander Drew Smyly was scratched from his scheduled start for the Braves against the Cubs and placed on the 10day IL because of inflammation in his left forearm . ... Reds outfielder Aristides Aquino was placed on the IL after he had surgery for an injured left hamate.

Briefly: Tim Mead is quitting as president of Baseball’s Hall of Fame after two years. The Hall said the move takes effect in midMay. Mead succeeded Jeff Idelson, who held the job from 20082019 . ... The Twins sent former Giants righthander Shaun Anderson to their alternate site.
