Children’s Musical Theater San Jose plans to open a Creative Arts Center on May 4, putting its rehearsals, classes, workshops, offices and props, set and costume areas in one space for the first time, the 53yearold company announced.

The new 25,000squarefoot facility at 1545 Parkmoor Ave., once a post office and more recently Savers thrift store, is being upgraded with a dance floor and lighting and sound systems. The project, which began construction in September, is funded with a $2.2 million capital campaign, of which the company has raised 96%.

“I am so proud that we can now say that we — our organization, our children and our community — didn’t just survive this past year but are coming out of it stronger, more resilient and more vivacious than ever,” said Artistic Director Kevin Hauge in a statement. “This new cuttingedge arts center is the living proof of that.”

The company plans to continue performing in the Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose, but with the new facility, students will be able to rehearse with their sets before shows move into the performance venue.

Due to COVID19 safety concerns, the company plans to stage three shows in the parking lot outside the Creative Arts Center from July 8 to 25, with titles to be announced later.
