Playing baseball at Coors Field, according to former Rockies outfielder Gabe Kapler, “could go a little sideways.”

Truth be told, sometimes a lot sideways.

So when the Giants learned Monday’s scheduled series opener in Denver would be postponed in favor of a doubleheader Tuesday with both games lasting just seven innings, it was almost a relief.

“I was just talking to Ron Wotus about this, who’s as traditional as they come,”

Kapler, the Giants’ manager, said of the thirdbase coach. “We both kind of smiled and said it’s really nice that we’re going to try to cover 14 innings instead of two nineinning games tomorrow.”

The Mile High City was cold and rainy Monday, and the hope is the weather will clear to get in two games Tuesday. Doubleheaders during the pandemic have been limited to seveninning games, and that could be a blessing at a place that often features lots of runs and pitchers.

“You don’t want to blow through your entire bullpen over the course of two games,” Kapler said.

The first game is slated for 2:40 p.m. PDT, and the nightcap is to begin 30 minutes after the final pitch of the opener. The Giants said Aaron Sanchez and Alex Wood will start but weren’t prepared to announce who’ll pitch first.

It’ll be the Giants’ first doubleheader of the season. Last year, they struggled in this forum — getting swept twice and splitting once while being outscored 2811 in the six games.

Nevertheless, the Giants welcome the shorter games because they have several players with aches and pains. Infielder Tommy La Stella, who strained his left hamstring Sunday in San Diego, likely is headed for the injured list, and shortstop Brandon Crawford missed the past two games with a sore calf but could play Tuesday.

Kapler said infielder Jason Vosler, one of five taxisquad player in Denver, is a candidate to be added to the roster and make a start. Rosters can be increased from 26 to 27 for one of the games. The others on the taxi squad are catcher Joey Bart, infielder Thairo Estrada and pitchers Conner Menez and Kervin Castro.

Kapler was a Colorado outfielder in 200203 and noted the elevation can be difficult on the health front.

“It’s not the easiest place to have your body recover,” Kapler said. “You feel the aches and pains more. Daytoday recovery is more challenging.”
