Big comeback for Vegas in Game 5

-

Mark Stone scored on a breakaway 50 seconds into overtime as the Vegas Golden Knights overcame a twogoal deficit to beat the Colorado Avalanche 32 in Denver and take a 32 lead in their secondround series.

Max Pacioretty corralled the puck after a blocked shot and fed it to Stone, who was off to the races. Stone beat Philipp Grubauer on the glove side to hush what had been a boisterous crowd.

Trailing 20 entering the third, the Golden Knights found another gear with Alex Tuch scoring 1:03 into the period and Jonathan Marchessault tying it just 3:04 later.

But it really was the MarcAndre Fleury Show, with the Vegas goaltender stopping 28 shots, many of the sensational variety. He stuffed J.T. Compher 10 seconds into overtime.

⏩ Brayden Point and Ross Colton scored to back Andrei Vasilevskiy’s shutout, and the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning beat the host Carolina Hurricanes 20 to win the secondround playoff series in five games.

Golf: Rickie Fowler came up just short — one roll of the ball — failing to get through U.S. Open qualifying in Columbus, Ohio. Fowler had not missed the U.S. Open since 2010.

WNBA: Tina Charles scored 31 points and the host Washington Mystics held off the Minnesota Lynx 8581 . ... Arike Ogunbowale scored 22 points, including two free throws with 6.9 seconds left, and the Dallas Wings beat the Mercury 8581 in Phoenix.

Obituary: Jim Fassel, whose bold guarantee of a playoff bid late in the 2000 season seemingly catapulted the New York Giants to a spot in the Super Bowl, has died at 71.

Son John Fassel, specialteams coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, said his father was taken to a Las Vegas hospital with chest pains and died while being treated Monday.

Jim Fassel, the 1997 NFL Coach of the Year, led the Giants from 1997 to 2003, going 58531. New York lost the Super Bowl 347 to the Baltimore Ravens in February 2001.

Fassel was a Stanford assistant coach from 1979 through ’83, including as offensive coordinator under head coach Paul Wiggin. Fassel also was the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 1995 under Mike White.
