Ronaldo scores 2 more goals, Portugal advances at Euros

-

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two penalties to tie the overall men’s scoring record with 109 goals and Portugal advanced to the round of 16 at the European Championship after a 22 draw with France in Budapest, Hungary.

Ronaldo’s tournamentleading fourth and fifth goals moved him level with former Iran striker Ali Daei at 109, while also extending his overall tournament record to 14.

Karim Benzema scored both of France’s goals, his first ever at the tournament after failing to find the target at Euro 2008 and 2012. They were also his first goals for the national team since October 2015. Soon after that, he lost his place in the team because of his role in a sex tape scandal.

Defending champion Portugal finished in third place in the group, one spot behind Germany. France, which had already qualified, was first.

Spain 5, Slovakia 0: An embarrassing own-goal by Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the first half put Spain on its way to victory in Seville. Dubravka saved an early penalty from Alvaro Morata but then clumsily knocked the ball into his own net after it ricocheted high into the air off a shot by Pablo Sarabia in the 30th minute. The victory allowed Spain to advance in second place in Group E with five points. The team will next play Croatia in Copenhagen on Monday.

Germany 2, Hungary 2: Leon Goretzka scored late to send Germany to the knockout stage after the draw in Munich. Jamal Musiala made an immediate impact after coming on in the 82nd minute, eluding three defenders to give Timo Werner room to shoot. Werner was blocked but the rebound fell for Goretzka, who shot past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi in the 84th. It had looked like Adam Szalai was going to drag his team into the round of 16. The Hungary captain scored one goal early against the run of play and set up Andras Schafer to make it 2-1 right after Kai Havertz had equalized for Germany. Germany finished second in the group with four points and will next face England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.

Sweden 3, Poland 2: Viktor Claesson scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time in St. Petersburg, Russia, to give Sweden first place in Group E. Robert Lewandowski scored two goals for Poland but wasted a golden opportunity when two consecutive headers bounced off the crossbar in the 17th minute. Emil Forsberg had already scored for Sweden by then, after 81 seconds for the second quickest goal in the tournament’s history. He added a second in the 59th on a counterattack. Sweden will next face Ukraine in Glasgow on Tuesday. Lewandowski leaves Euro 2020 with three goals, his best haul at a World Cup or European Championship.

COPA AMERICA Brazil 2, Colombia 1:

Brazil beat Colombia in a tense match in Rio de Janeiro that featured a particularly bizarre goal in the 78th minute, when

Argentine referee Nestor Pitana accidentally blocked a pass by Neymar about 10 meters in front of the Colombian area. Colombian defenders momentarily stopped, but Brazil substitute Lucas Paqueta just moved the ball to left-back Renan Lodi and his cross found Roberto Firmino, whose angled header beat Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina. The Colombians initially refused to restart the match but Pitana, the referee of the 2018 World Cup final, confirmed Brazil’s goal. Brazil kept pressuring in the final minutes and found its reward in added time when Casemiro netted the winner off a Neymar corner.

Ecuador 2, Peru 2: Earlier Wednesday, Ecuador and Peru drew in Goiania, Brazil. Both teams retained their chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Brazil leads the group with nine points after three matches. Colombia has four from four matches. Peru also has four points, followed by Ecuador (three) and Venezuela (two). The top four teams advance to the playoff stage.
