Conforto HR saves Mets after big gaffe

Michael Conforto hit a tworun homer in the ninth inning to complete a comeback from a sixrun deficit and the New York Mets overcame a gaffe by pitcher Taijuan Walker to beat the Pirates 76 on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

With the bases loaded in the first, Walker swatted at Kevin Newman’s dribbler, trying to make contact while it was still in foul ground. Plate umpire Jeremy Riggs correctly called it a fair ball.

Walker argued the call, and no Mets reacted to retrieve the ball. The three Pittsburgh runners took off, and all came around to score.

Nationals, Padres split: Alcides Escobar hit an RBI single in the ninth for an 8-7 win by host Washington to end a disturbing weekend. The Padres won the completion of Saturday’s game, suspended after gunfire outside the stadium, 10-4.

Yankees 9, Red Sox 1: Gleyber Torres and Rougned Odor homered to back a strong start from Jameson Taillon as host New York beat Boston.

White Sox 4, Astros 0: Carlos Rodon allowed one hit through seven innings and Chicago topped visiting Houston.

Mariners 7, Angels 4: Logan Gilbert struck out nine and Seattle defeated host Los Angeles despite Shohei Ohtani’s 34th homer.

Phillies sweep Marlins: J.T. Realmuto went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and host Philadelph­ia beat Miami 7-4 in the regularly scheduled series finale. Realmuto’s two-run 10th-inning homer gave the Phillies a 4-2 win in the conclusion to Saturday’s suspended game.

Blue Jays sweep Rangers: Hyun Jin Ryu threw a threehitte­r for a 5-0 win in the opener, and Steven Matz and two Toronto relievers combined for another shutout, 10-0, in the second game in Buffalo, N.Y.

Rays 7, Braves 5: Yandy Diaz homered during a fourrun rally in the seventh inning and Tampa Bay beat host Atlanta.

D’backs 6, Cubs 4: Merrill Kelly threw eight solid innings as Arizona avoided a three-game sweep against visiting Chicago.

Brewers 8, Reds 0: Corbin Burnes pitched into the ninth inning as Milwaukee beat host Cincinnati.

Tigers 7, Twins 0: Jeimer Candelario homered and drove in three runs as host Detroit finished a sweep of Minnesota.

Orioles 5, Royals 0: Matt Harvey ended his nine-game losing skid with a win over host Kansas City.
