Quick goal pushes U.S. past Canada

Shaq Moore scored 20 seconds in and the United States beat Canada 10 to win Group B of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Kansas City, Kan.

Moore’s goal was the fastest since U.S. records began in 1990. Clint Dempsey scored 30 seconds in against Ghana in the Americans’ 2014 World Cup opener.

Both nations already were assured of advancing. The U.S. finished atop its firstround group with a 30 record and will play its quarterfin­al on Sunday at Arlington, Texas, against Costa Rica or Jamaica.

U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter is using a mostly junior varsity roster for the Gold Cup. Top players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams and Zack Steffen will be on hand in when the U.S. hosts Canada in a World Cup qualifier on Sept. 5 in Nashville.

MLS: Robin Lod scored a late goal and host Minnesota United beat Seattle 10 to end the Sounders’ MLSrecord 13game unbeaten streak to open a season. Lod’s onetouch finish of a cross by Niko Hansen, who came on in the 74th minute, gave Minnesota (553) a 10 lead in the 81st. The Sounders (815) were the first team to go unbeaten through the first 13 games of an MLS season, breaking a record set by the LA Galaxy in the league’s inaugural 1996 season and tied three other times.
