What makes a gun illegal in California?

In 1999, the state assault weapons ban was expanded to include firearms with special features similar to those semiautomatic weapons specifically named in the previous law. Some of those features, highlighted in red below, include a flash suppressor, a pistol grip, a telescoping stock and a large-capacity magazine. The modifications shown in green would make the weapon legal in California.
