Highlighting performances of athletes with Bay Area and Northern California ties at the Olympics:
Collin Morikawa (Cal), Team USA golf:
He arrived at the Olympics having won the British Open, but at the Olympics he had to settle for the thrill of being one of the last two standing from a seven-man playoff for bronze. Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan beat Morikawa with an 8-foot par putt on the fourth extra hole. Alexander Massialas (San Franciso, Stanford), U.S. fencing: After enduring two weeks in quarantine, he helped the U.S. fencing team earn bronze in the foil final. Ann Killion wrote from Japan about his battle to achieve it in the same year he helped save fencing at Stanford. Richard Torrez Jr. (Tulare), U.S. boxing: He defeated Cuba’s Dainier Pero in a 4-1 decision in the boxing quarterfinals at Kokugikan Arena to become the first super heavyweight to medal for Team USA since 1988. Trailing after the first round, Torrez came out swinging in the second, wearing Pero down. He next faces Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev on Wednesday.
