THREE THINGS TO WATCH
Here are three things to watch Tuesday at the Olympics (all times Pacific):
1. Women’s golf (3:30 p.m., Golf Channel): Play begins with the United States fielding a strong team. The American squad has Nelly Korda (the world’s topranked player), her sister Jessica (No. 13), San Franciscoborn Danielle Kang (5) and Lexi Thompson (9). South Korea’s team is loaded with Jin Young Ko, defending gold medalist Inbee Park, Sei Young Kim and HyoJoo Kim — the world Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6. Stanford alum Albane Valenzuela plays for Switzerland. Women’s golf returned to the Olympics in 2016 for the first time since 1900. 2. Women’s volleyball (8:30 p.m., USA Network): The quarterfinals begin with the United States — which includes Stanford alum Foluke Gunderson — playing the Dominican Republic in the second of four matches. The Americans are a perennial medal contender — they’ve reached the podium in five of the past nine Games — but they have yet to win gold. China, the defending gold medalist, was eliminated in pool play. That opens the door for Brazil, which won gold in 2008 and 2012 and has played for a medal in six of the past seven Olympics. 3. Men’s water polo (10 p.m., CNBC): The quarterfinals open with the United States playing Spain. The Americans come into the match hardly on a high note: After winning their first two matches, they were beaten by Italy (1211 on Thursday), Hungary (118 on Saturday) and closed pool play Monday with a 145 loss to Greece. Spain — which won its lone gold in the sport in 1996 — was unbeaten in pool play and, after allowing Serbia to score 12 goals in the opener, held its final four opponents to 19 combined goals. The U.S. men (3 silver, 3 bronze) last medaled in 2008.
