Reeling Orioles lose 19th straight game

-

The Orioles staggered to their 19th consecutive loss Tuesday night, allowing 19 hits and falling behind the Angels by 11 runs early in a 14-8 rout at Camden Yards.

Baltimore trailed 5-1 in the second inning, 8-1 in the third and 13-2 in the fourth while limping to another lopsided loss in the major leagues’ longest skid since Kansas City dropped 19 straight in 2005.

“It’s tough to stay in the game when you’re down 13-2 after four innings,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said.

The Orioles have yielded at least eight runs in 12 games during the streak and been outscored 163-55. Baltimore stands two losses short of matching the franchise record for successive defeats (set in 1988) and is nearing the modernday record of 23, held by the 1961 Phillies.

“This is incredibly challenging and a huge gut check,” Hyde said.

After Baltimore’s Ryan Mountcastle homered in the first for a 1-0 lead, things soured fast for the Orioles. No. 8 hitter Jo Adell tripled in two runs off Spenser Watkins (2-6) and Juan Lagares followed with a two-run homer.

The Angels went 11for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Mountcastle had two solo shots, Anthony Santander went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs and Ramon Urias had three RBIs for the Orioles.

Up next for Baltimore: a date with the Angels’ Shohei Ohtani (8-1, 2.79 ERA), who is 7-0 on the mound since his last loss May 28.

Astros 4, Royals 0: Luis Garcia pitched into the seventh inning and two relievers completed a four-hitter for host Houston. Carlos Correa had two hits and two RBIs to help the Astros snap a twogame skid.

Rays 3, Phillies 1: Nelson Cruz returned from the COVID-19 list, played first base for the first time in his career and hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the eighth inning for visiting Tampa Bay.

Yankees 5, Braves 4: DJ LeMahieu hit a tie-breaking two-run homer, and Giancarlo Stanton and Rougned Odor added solo shots for visiting New York, which extended its winning streak to 11 games.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 2:

Dylan Cease pitched seven effective innings, Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer and visiting Chicago stopped a three-game slide.

Red Sox 11, Twins 9: Hunter Renfroe homered twice, the second during a five-run fifth inning that gave host Boston a six-run advantage, and the Red Sox prevailed.

Rangers 7, Indians 3: Nathaniel Lowe was 5-for-5 with a three-run homer in the first inning for visiting Texas, which got six strikeouts in five innings from Taylor Hearn.

Nationals 5, Marlins 1: Tres Barrera had three hits, including a homer, and Washington won in Miami.

Pirates 4, D’backs 2: JT Brubaker pitched five scoreless innings for his first win in nearly three months for host Pittsburgh. Brubaker (5-13) allowed four hits with six strikeouts, stranding five runners in scoring position.

Tigers 4, Cardinals 3: Miguel Cabrera and Robbie Grossman hit back-to-back home runs to lead visiting Detroit. Two days after hitting his 500th homer, Cabrera connected on No. 501, crushing a 79-mph slider by starter Jack Flaherty into the upper deck in left field in the third inning.

Brewers 7, Reds 4: Omar Narvaez hit a go-ahead RBI double to cap a four-run rally in the seventh inning and Kolten Wong hit a two-run homer and an RBI single for host Milwaukee.

Rockies-Cubs, postponed: The game at Wrigley Field was called because of thunderstorms, to be made up in a doubleheader Wednesday.
