A decomposed body was found in a remote area of the Point Reyes National Seashore, and investigators have not been able to identify it.

According to a bulletin issued Monday, the skeletal remains were discovered last week when park authorities were notified of a body found far from any trail and away from the shoreline.

Park rangers were alerted by another park employee who discovered the remains. Rangers then hiked out to the remote location and found the skeleton, which they were able to identify as human. There was no identification with the remains and park officials did not state its gender or any other information. Cause of death has not been determined, though foul play is not suspected at this time.

The investigation is being conducted by an interagency team led by National Park Service law enforcement and Marin County Sheriff ’s Department investigators.
