An incarcerated man housed in the Marin County Jail died Saturday night, according to the Marin County Sheriff ’s Office.

A deputy and a nurse found the man slumped over in his cell while making rounds dispensing medication, officials said. The man was the only inmate assigned to that cell.

The deputy and the nurse “immediately started performing life saving measures” and called in the San Rafael Fire Department for help, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

The incarcerated man was pronounced dead at 9:15 p.m., officials said, about 40 minutes after he was found.

The San Rafael Police Department is investigating the death, and the Sonoma County Sheriff ’s Office Coroner Unit is taking care of the coroner duties, such as determining the cause of death and notifying next of kin.

Additional details about the man were not immediately released.
