Toronto’s Ryu on IL: neck issue

-

Toronto left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu, who allowed five runs in two innings against Minnesota on Friday, was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday because of neck tightness.

“It wasn’t something he felt while he was pitching,” general manager Ross Atkins told MLB.com. “He woke up the next day with significant tightness, and it looks like it’s a mild strain. We decided not to push through at this point and take the opportunity to have it get completely out of there.”

Ryu has allowed 12 earned runs and 13 hits over 41⁄3 innings in his past two outings. After posting a 3.22 ERA through Aug. 4, he has an 8.10 ERA in his past eight games.

Medical report: Detroit put closer Gregory Soto (broken finger) and center fielder Derek Hill (sprained knee) on the 10-day IL. Soto was hurt when he was hit by a line drive Friday . ... Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier was activated from the COVID-19 IL a day after he was placed on the list as a precaution after feeling ill . ... Among the players exiting the 10-day IL were Tampa Bay left-hander Shane McClanahan, Cubs infielder Nico Hoerner and Texas pitcher Mike Foltynewicz.

It’s a deal: Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts no doubt endeared himself to Cincinnati rookie TJ Friedl on Sunday when he convinced a Reds fan to give him the ball that Friedl had hit for his first career homer in the sixth inning. The fan gave the baseball to Betts, who made sure the ball found its way to the Reds’ dugout.

When Betts returned to right field in the seventh inning, he was toting a bat, which he gave to the fan.

Briefly: Pitcher Kohei Arihara, who signed a two-year, $6.2 million deal with Texas in December after pitching for six seasons in Japan, was designated for assignment by the Rangers . ... The list of players designated for assignment also includes Cubs righthander Dillon Maples, Arizona right-hander Jake Faria, Baltimore right-hander Dusten Knight and Tampa Bay right-hander Joey Krehbiel.
