Highway 50, a main artery from the Bay Area to South Lake Tahoe, is scheduled to reopen to all traffic at 8 a.m. Tuesday, one month after it was closed by the Caldor Fire, Caltrans announced Monday.

The highway reopened to local traffic Monday and to commercial traffic between Kyburz and Meyers in El Dorado County. Motorists should be on alert for fire, tree and utility crews, Caltrans said Monday.

The Caldor Fire started Aug. 14 and Highway 50 was closed Aug. 20, causing major traffic jams as residents heading westbound from South Lake Tahoe were rerouted.

The Caldor Fire was 76% contained as of Monday, with 219,101 acres burned. Portions of the Highway 50 corridor remain an evacuation area with roadblocks set up along the highway.

During an average month in 2019, the stretch of Highway 50 closed by the Caldor Fire was traveled by 90,000 motorists, according to statistics compiled by Caltrans.

Homeowners were being allowed to return to see their property, provided they have a pass from the El Dorado County Sheriff ’s Office. Passes were available until 4 p.m. Monday at the Chevron in Pollock Pines, for eastbound traffic and at 1834 Santa Fe Road in Meyers for westbound traffic.
