Gunman kills 6 in attack at Russia college

-

An 18-year-old law student wielding a shotgun went on a shooting spree on a Russian university campus Monday, killing at least six people and wounding 19, according to authorities.

Students described scenes of chaos, saying they barricaded themselves in classrooms and waited in terror while hearing shots and screams in their building, Russian media reported. Others escaped by jumping from secondstory windows.

The gunman resisted arrest but was later wounded and taken into custody, law enforcement officials said.

RIA Novosti, a state news agency, posted videos showing a man dressed in black clothing, a black helmet and carrying a gun. He was identified as a student at Perm State University, where the shooting took place, about 650 miles east of Moscow.

While still rare, school shootings have become more common in Russia in recent years. In May, an attacker killed seven students and two school employees in Kazan, another provincial Russian city.

A member of Parliament, Alexander Khinshtein, identified the gunman as Timur Bekmansurov and said he was a law student at the university.

A lengthy social media post attributed to the gunman went up shortly before the attack Monday. It was a screed stretching to several pages, suggesting a lifelong fascination with violence. He did not hint at a political motive.

Lava consumes island homes

Giant rivers of lava tumbled slowly but relentlessly toward the sea on Monday after a volcano erupted on the Spanish island of La Palma, with prompt evacuations helping to avoid casualties.

Long flows of fiery red lava slid down hillsides and swallowed houses, gardens and swimming pools in a trail of destruction across the verdant countryside.

An incessant rumble, like that of an airplane passing overhead, came from the nearby Cumbre Vieja ridge where the eruption occurred on Sunday when two fissures started belching bright red magma into the air and set the glowing lava rivers in motion.

Scientists had been monitoring the area on the island of La Palma, in the volcanic Canary Islands, in recent days amid thousands of mostly small earthquakes, and authorities quickly evacuated around 5,500 people.

The lava has destroyed more than 100 homes on the hillsides.

Late Monday, lava began flowing from a new fissure.
