MLB notes: Yankees’ Severino set to return after 2 years.

-

Pitcher Luis Severino was activated by the Yankees before Monday’s series opener against Texas and is in position to make his first majorleague appearance in nearly two years.

“It will be like my first tenure here in 2015. It’ll be the same emotion,” Severino said. “But after I throw the first pitch, I think everything is going to come back like I used to be.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone plans to use the two-time All-Star out of the bullpen.

“He could find himself in the highest-leverage situation or whatever and could evolve into a multiinning role,” Boone said.

The 27-year-old righthander had Tommy John surgery Feb. 27, 2020. He made four minor-league appearances totaling 102⁄3 innings for Tampa, Hudson Valley and Somerset, allowing four runs, five hits and one home run with three walks and 15 strikeouts.

A 19-game winner in 2018, Severino signed a $40 million, four-year contract before the 2019 season.

“It’s been long enough,” Severino said. “Definitely be ready for any situation.”

Gose back as pitcher:

Formerly a fleet outfielder, Anthony Gose returned to the majors five years later Monday night as a rocket-armed reliever for the Indians, flashing 100 mph heat and fanning Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez.

Gose pitched 12⁄3 innings, allowing one run with one walk and one strikeout in the second game of a doubleheader against the Royals. Of his 39 pitches, seven zoomed into triple digits.

The 31-year-old last played in the majors in 2016 with Detroit. He spent parts of five years with the Tigers and Toronto before becoming a a pitcher.

Gose is in his third year in Cleveland’s minorleague system and drew attention with his performance at Triple-A Columbus this season, striking out 49 in 33 innings.

Bieber nears return:

Right-hander Shane Bieber is expected to rejoin Cleveland’s rotation this week. The reigning AL Cy Young winner has been sidelined since June 13 with a strained shoulder. Bieber threw 57 pitches in 31⁄3 innings for Double-A Akron on Sunday.
