Mickelson closes strong, wins Champions event
Phil Mickelson won for the third time in four career PGA Tour Champions starts, closing with a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday for a two-shot victory over runner-up Miguel Angel Jimenez in the Constellation Furyk & Friends in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mickelson, 51, won for the first time since his out-of-nowhere triumph at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in May for his sixth career major title. He has struggled on the PGA Tour since then, and this was his first Champions event since February.
Mickelson, who finished the first-year event at 15-under 201, said he plans to play at least two more tournaments on the 50and-over tour this fall.
LPGA Tour: In West Caldwell, N.J., Jin Young Ko finished off a wire-to-wire victory in the Cognizant Founders Cup with her 14th consecutive round in the 60s to match a 16-year-old record held by Annika Sorenstam.
Ko closed with a 5-under 66 to finish at 18-under 266 for a fourshot victory over runner-up Caroline Masson.
“I still have a chance (to) beat Annika, and I will try to do my best,” Ko said after getting a Champagne shower.
PGA Tour: Sungjae Im recorded seven birdies in an eight-hole span while shooting 9-under 62 for a four-shot victory over runner-up Matthew Wolff in the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.
Im holed a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 6 and added birdies on Nos. 7 and 9. He then ran off four birdies to start the back nine, the best of that lot on No. 10 when he went from a fairway bunker to 25 feet and made the putt.
Im finished at 24-under 260.
European Tour: In Madrid, Rafa Cabrera Bello birdied the first playoff hole to top Adri Arnaus in the Spanish Open.
Cabrera Bello closed with a 2-under 69 to force a playoff with Arnaus (67), both finishing at 19-under 265.
