Giants opt to bring back Slater, García and Brebbia
The Giants agreed to terms Tuesday on deals for 2022 with outfielder Austin Slater and pitchers John Brebbia and Jarlín García, three of their arbitration-eligible players.
They also declined to tender contracts to pitchers Sam Delaplane and Joe Palumbo and outfielder Luis Gonzalez, players not yet eligible for salary arbitration, opening three spots on their 40-man roster.
Those were the only three players non-tendered by the Giants at Tuesday’s deadline for teams to offer contracts to their unsigned players. The deadline was moved up in anticipation of a potential lockout.
Four other arbitration-eligible players — outfielders Mike Yastrzemski and Darin Ruf, catcher Curt Casali and reliever Dominic Leone — were tendered contracts for 2022.
Slater agreed to a one-year deal for $1.85 million, García for $1.725 million and Brebbia for $837,500, avoiding potential arbitration.
Salaries for Yastrzemski, Ruf, Casali and Leone haven’t been finalized. The Giants can continue negotiating with those players and, if the sides do not reach a deal by Jan. 14, they’ll exchange salary figures for possible arbitration hearings — though a work stoppage could affect that process.
According to MLB Trade Rumors projections, Yastrzemski is estimated to earn $3.1 million for 2022, Ruf $2.6 million, Casali $2 million and Leone $1.5 million.
Yastrzemski is arbitrationeligible for the first time. Ruf will go through the process for the second time and Casali and Leone are in their final year of eligibility.
Slater, who earned $1.15 million in 2021, and García ($950,000), each saw salary bumps in their second year of arbitration eligibility. Slater played in 129 games in 2021 and had a .241/.320/.423 slash line with 12 home runs. García made 58 relief appearances and posted a 6-3 record and 2.62 ERA. Brebbia, who earned $800,000 in 2021, per Cot’s Contracts, made 18 relief outings with a 5.89 ERA.
Delaplane, a 26-year-old right-hander, was acquired by the Giants from Seattle for cash considerations in May, despite being out for the year following Tommy John surgery. He was added to the active roster earlier this month.
Palumbo, 27, was claimed off waivers from Texas on Nov. 5. Gonzalez, 26, was selected off waivers in August from the White Sox, after he had sustained a season-ending injury.
