Cal broadcaster wins national honor

-

Cal football radio play-byplay broadcaster Joe Starkey was selected by the National Sports Media Association as the winner of the 2022 Woody Durham Voice of College Sports Award.

Starkey, perhaps best known for his call of “The Play” in 1982, including his emotional “the band is on the field!” to describe Cal's five-lateral kickoff return for a game-winning touchdown against Stanford in the Big Game, will be honored June 27 at the 62nd NSMA awards banquet in Winston-Salem, N.C.

NHL: Nick Paul and Connor Brown each had a goal and an assist, Matt Murray stopped 32 shots, and the host Ottawa Senators beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1.

Nick Holden and Adam Gaudette also scored for the Senators, who won for the second time in three games.

Nico Hischier scored for the Devils, and Nico Daws finished with 20 saves. New Jersey has lost seven straight — all in regulation — and 10 of its past 11. ⏩ Mitch Marner scored with 2:09 left in overtime as the host Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3.

Marner tied the game 3-3 late in the third period. The forward extended his scoring streak to eight. He has 11 goals and 11 assists in that stretch.

Auston Matthews also scored twice for Toronto, his 30th and 31st goals of the season. The center appeared to suffer a head injury with 23 seconds left in regulation and did not return for overtime.

Soccer: Doubts and disputes over FIFA's push for biennial World Cups contributed to Britain and Ireland dropping plans for a joint bid to host the 2030 edition and opting to pursue the 2028 European Championship instead.

A potential rival also moved aside when Italy switched its focus on bidding for Euro 2032 rather than 2028.
