Hardaway, Stanley finalists for Hall of Fame

-

Former Warriors guard Tim Hardaway and ex-Cal and Stanford head coach Marianne Stanley are among 11 finalists for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made Friday in Cleveland as part of the NBA’s All-Star Weekend events.

Manu Ginobili, a four-time NBA champion who spent his entire career with the San Antonio Spurs, and former All-Stars Michael Cooper and Marques Johnson will also be voted on for possible induction along with NBA coach George Karl and WNBA standouts Swin Cash and Lindsay Whalen.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins also is up for induction along with longtime NBA referee Hugh Evans and Texas high school coach Leta Andrews.

Hardaway spent his first 6½ NBA seasons with Golden State, helping form the Warriors’ “Run TMC” fastbreak offensive threat with Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond.

Hardaway helped the Warriors make the playoffs twice in his first three seasons, and averaged a career-high 23.4 points per game in the 1991–92 season.

Stanley, who is now the head coach of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, is mainly known for helping establish the popularity of the women’s game as head coach of Old Dominion, where she won three national titles — the first two while coaching Nancy Lieberman and Anne Donovan — in the 1970s and ’80s.

Stanley was co-head coach of Stanford with Amy Tucker for the Cardinal’s 1995-96 Final Four season while head coach Tara VanDerveer was coaching the U.S. women’s team to gold in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Stanley spent the next four seasons as head coach of Cal, but never had a winning season guiding the Bears.

The Hall of Fame’s class of 2022 will be announced at the men’s Final Four on April 2 in New Orleans. The enshrinement is Sept. 10 in Springfield, Mass.

The Hall of Fame also announced New York Knicks Hall of Famer Walt Frazier, writer Mechelle Voepel and NBC executive Dick Ebersol are the 2022 Curt Gowdy Media Award recipients.
