New York, New York: Mets take 2, Yanks’ run goes on

-

Mets manager Buck Showalter saved starter Carlos Carrasco for the nightcap of Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Braves, hoping the 35-year-old could adjust to pitch more innings if Game 1 taxed New York’s bullpen.

Everything seems to be working out as hoped for the first-place Mets.

Carrasco dodged trouble for eight innings, Pete Alonso homered against Kyle Wright on an off night for Atlanta’s breakout right-hander and New York beat the Braves 3-0 Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Alonso had two RBI singles in the opener as the Mets pounced early against Charlie Morton, and New York’s bullpen closed out a five-hitter to beat the Braves 5-4. Alonso had two hits in each game.

Carrasco (2-1) stranded seven runners with some masterful work out of the stretch, keeping Atlanta off the board despite six hits and two walks. He threw 96 pitches and struck out five, bouncing back after allowing eight runs in his previous start against St. Louis.

“It’s a reminder of how good a pitcher he is,” Showalter said. “That’s a tough lineup.”

Dominic Smith hit a two-run double against Wright (3-1) in the first, building off a four-hit game Sunday that might have saved his spot when rosters went from 28 to 26 Monday.

Alonso went the other way for a solo drive in the sixth, his fifth homer.

In the first game, four of the Mets’ first five batters reached against Morton, with the Mets taking a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Alonso and Eduardo Escobar. Alonso added another run-scoring single during New York’s two-run second inning.

Olson hit a three-run homer in the fifth against starter David Peterson (1-0), his third of the season, to cut Atlanta’s deficit to 5-4.

Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Yankees win their 11th game in a row

Aaron Judge homered and drove in three runs, Jameson Taillon allowed one run in six innings, and the Yankees extended their winning streak to 11 games by beating the Blue Jays 9-1 in Toronto.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a tworun homer in the ninth, his fifth of the season. New York leads the MLB with 34 home runs this season, including 23 in the past 11 games.

Judge’s homer was his ninth, tying teammate Anthony Rizzo for the big-league lead. Judge has 13 RBIs in his past five games after getting a two-run double in New York’s six-run seventh inning.

Taillon (2-1) allowed five hits, walked none, and struck out four to win his second straight decision.

Josh Donaldson and Marwin Gonzalez each had RBI doubles and Aaron Hicks reached base four times as the Yankees improved to 18-6. It’s the seventh time in franchise history that New York has won 18 of its first 24 games.

Red Sox 4, Angels 0: Rafael Devers homered, Michael Wacha pitched into the sixth inning and host Boston beat Los Angeles. J.D. Martinez hit a solo homer in the eighth to seal it for Boston, which held the Angels to three hits in its second shutout of the season.

Diamondbacks 5, Marlins 4: Christian Walker had a home run, a double and three RBIs, and Arizona held off host Miami. Pavin Smith also homered and Ketel Marte drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks, who have won six of eight. For the second consecutive night, Miami rallied from a 5-0 deficit with four runs in the seventh inning, but the Marlins lost their second straight after a seven-game winning streak.

Rangers 6, Phillies 4: Mitch Garver and Jonah Heim homered and Zach Reks snapped a tie game with a two-RBI double, leading visiting Texas past Philadelphia. J.T. Realmuto hit a solo homer in the eighth that made it 6-4 as the Phillies, no-hit on Friday by five Mets pitchers, opened a six-game homestand that includes four more with New York.

Twins 7, Orioles 2: Ryan Jeffers hit a tie-breaking, three-run homer in the sixth inning and surging Minnesota won in Baltimore for its fourth straight victory. The Twins have won 12 of 13 to move six games over .500 (15-9) and into first place in the AL Central, which does not have another team with a winning record. Minnesota has outscored the opposition 63-25 during its 13-game run.

White Sox 3, Cubs 1: Tim Anderson homered and Michael Kopech threw four shutout innings as the Southsiders won at Wrigley Field. Scheduled Cubs starter Drew Smyly went on the bereavement list before the game and was replaced by reliever Scott Effross.

Padres-Guardians, postponed: The game in Cleveland was postponed by rain and a soggy forecast and will be made up in a traditional doubleheader Wednesday.

Pirates-Tigers, postponed: Rain forced the game in Detroit to be called off. It will be made up in a straight doubleheader Wednesday.

Briefly: Minnesota infielder Miguel Sano will have surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee and there’s no time frame for his return, manager Rocco Baldelli said . ...
