Valley Christian wide receiver Dickey commits to Oregon

Valley Christian coach Mike Machado says receiver Jurrion Dickey makes catches you “usually only see watching TV on Sundays.”

The junior announced Monday where he'll be playing on Saturdays in 2023, choosing Oregon over Penn State, USC, UCLA and Washington.

A three-year starter and three-time All-Metro selection, Dickey made his announcement at the Boys and Girls Club in East Palo Alto, among family and friends. It's where he grew up.

He's coming off his most productive season with 78 catches for 1,304 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2021. He's ranked the No. 59 recruit overall from the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports, and No. 7 in California.

In the fall, Machado called Dickey's athletic skills “borderline freakish,” noting a slam dunk the three-sport athlete sent down as a freshman in his varsity debut.

“He took off just inside the free-throw line and sent it down,” Machado said. “One of the craziest things I've ever seen.”

More football news: New coaches have been recently announced at Palo Alto (Dave DeGeronimo), Liberty-Brentwood (Mike Cable) and Moreau Catholic-Hayward (Keith Minor). Minor resigned from Encinal-Alameda after going 39-13 in five seasons. DeGeronimo was a former two-time assistant at Palo Alto, including the 2010 team that won a state title. … At least three undrafted Bay Area players have signed NFL free agent deals: El Cerrito and Mississippi State receiver Makai Polk (Ravens), Monte VistaDanville and Colorado linebacker Nate Landman (Falcons) and Freedom-Oakley and Fresno State running back Ronnie Rivers (Cardinals).

De La Salle golf: The De La Salle-Concord team broke an East Bay Athletic League tournament record by shooting 6-under par 354 on Monday at TPC Stonebrae Country Club in Hayward. Four of the five shot even-par 72 or better: Colin Keith (68), Jaden Dumdamaya (70), Josh Kim (71) and Joey Hayden (72). Jack Jerge shot a 73.

Softball rankings quandary:

Previous No. 4 AragonSan Mateo, led by Arizonabound Olivia DiNardo (634 career average, 25 home runs, 115 RBIs) and UCLA-signee Megan Grant (.544, 27, 99), were beaten last week 3-0 by unranked Sequoia-Redwood City, which in turn was upset by Burlingame 6-2. Earlier in the week, Burlingame (7-12-1) was thumped by Aragon, 12-1. Sequoia's Ainsley Waddell pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in the win over Aragon.

Pitching duel II: For the second time this season, Redwood-Larkspur's Sadie Leonard and Marin Catholic-Kentfield's Rose Malen dueled into extra innings last week and for the second time, the Giants prevailed. Leonard struck out 19 and allowed two hits in a 2-1 win at Marin Catholic. Kaela Sparler and Ashley Weingart drove in ninth-inning runs for Redwood (18-4, 12-1), which moved into sole possession of first place of the Marin County Athletic League. Malen allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out 13. In a 2-1 win at Redwood on March 28, Leonard struck out 18 and allowed two hits over 10 innings, while Malen struck out 16 and gave up three hits.

WCAL dual: The second big West Catholic Athletic League softball meeting is scheduled Wednesday at No. 3 Mitty, which hosts No. 2 St. Francis. Both teams sport 21-2 records. St. Francis won the first game at home 5-2 on March 6, taking advantage of three Mitty errors to score three unearned runs. Sophomore pitchers Shannon Keighran and Kate Munnerlyn combined on a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Since a 6-4 loss to SheldonSacramento in the Livermore Stampede tournament, St. Francis has won eight straight by a combined score of 97-1.
