Eugene David Sweeters passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 5th 2022, surrounded by family. Gene was born on August 28th 1928 to Carl and Julia Sweeters in Anaheim California. He was the youngest of five siblings, following Wilbur, Margaret, Carl, Jr. and James. In Gene’s early years, the family moved to Banning, California, where he grew up and pursued his love of athletics while attending Saint Boniface Indian School. Following in the footsteps of his older brothers, Gene attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles, where he played football and upon graduation was offered a scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco as a quarterback for the Dons.

In 1946, Gene came to San Francisco and began his love affair with the City of San Francisco. At USF, he studied Philosophy and became co-captain of the 1950 football team, playing alongside many friends and teammates of the fabled 1951 Dons Football Team. After graduating from USF as a member of the ROTC, Gene trained in the US Army 64th Field Artillery Battalion and served in the Korean Conflict as a forward observer. Returning home to California, Gene met and married San Francisco native Mary Hamill in 1962. As Gene and Mary began their lives together, Gene pursued his interest in law and attended San Francisco Law School.

Gene faithfully served as a prosecuting attorney for the San Francisco District Attorney Office from 1969 up until his retirement in 1996, spending most of his career in the homicide department. His retirement years were spent watching San Francisco team sporting events, golfing with friends, traveling, and spending time with family. Gene also enjoyed being a lector for Sunday Mass at Saint Brendan’s Church in San Francisco for over 30 years. An athlete up until the end of his life, Gene enjoyed his daily morning jog at either his beloved Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park or on the track of Kezar Stadium.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary, children Vincent (Nancy), Eileen, Linda, and Danielle, as well as his grandchildren Milo, Timothy, Damian, and Carolyn.
