Ambitious program set to highlight Black voices

- — Joshua Kosman

Ever since she burst onto the scene as an artist of musical power and insight, soprano Julia Bullock — one of the eight Collaborative Partners that Music Director EsaPekka Salonen has gathered around him at the San Francisco Symphony — has stood out for her inventive programming, as well as her purely vocal gifts.

Her solo program for the orchestra, titled “History’s Persistent Voice,” highlights the words of Black Americans through music written by women of color. The program includes commissioned premieres by Jessie Montgomery, Pamela Z and Carolyn Yarnell, as well as the first local performances of music by Allison Loggins-Hull and Tania León.

Christian Reif conducts members of the Symphony, with visual art installations by Hana S. Kim.
