Marlins’ Cabrera gets win in Denver

-

Rookie right-hander Edward Cabrera took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out nine in earning his first big league win, Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and drove in four, and the Miami Marlins had 21 hits in routing the Colorado Rockies 14-1 on Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader in Denver.

Cabrera, a 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic, used a fastball topping out at 99 mph with a slider and changeup to baffle Colorado’s lineup. He allowed one hit over six innings, overcoming four walks and two hit batters in the Marlins’ second win in seven games.

“This is a game I dedicated to my aunt, who passed away a few days ago,” Cabrera said through an interpreter. “I always felt she was there. She was with me during the whole game, so it was very special.”

After Cabrera hit Yonathan Daza above the left elbow with a 98 mph fastball to lead off the sixth, C.J. Cron lined to left for the Rockies’ first hit. Cabrera (1-0) later got Sam Hilliard to fly to left with the bases loaded to end the threat.

“To achieve something like this shows the work you put through the offseason,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera, among Miami’s top prospects, made seven starts for the Marlins last year, going 0-3 with a 5.81 ERA. An injury in spring training hurt his chances of making the roster for the start of the season, and he had been at Triple-A Jacksonville.

Guardians 4, Royals 0: Rookie lefty Konnor Pilkington struck out eight in five innings for his first big-league win and host Cleveland finished a threegame sweep. Jose Ramirez had a run-scoring groundout in the fifth for his MLB-leading 52nd RBI.

Mets 5, Nationals 0: Catcher Tomas Nido went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, and Carlos Carrasco (6-1) combined with three relievers on host New York’s second consecutive shutout to finish a perfect 6-0 homestand. Orioles 9, Mariners 2: Ryan Mountcastle and Ramon Urias hit two of host Baltimore’s four homers with back-toback shots in the sixth inning, and the Orioles cruised past Seattle.

Blue Jays 7, White Sox 3: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run homer, Danny Jansen added a three-run blast, and host Toronto extended its winning streak to seven games. Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu exited his start after four innings because of tightness in his pitching forearm.

Red Sox 7, Reds 1: Garrett Whitlock pitched six strong innings and Jackie Bradley Jr. drove in four runs to help host Boston beat Cincinnati. Whitlock (2-1) allowed five hits and one unearned run before two relievers completed the seven-hitter. Boston got to rookie Hunter Greene (2-7) in the fourth inning. Greene struck out seven batters in the first three innings before the Red Sox broke through.

Tigers 5, Twins 0: Left-hander Tarik Skubal allowed two hits in seven shutout innings for host Detroit. Jonathan Schoop, who is hitting .438 with a home run and six RBIs in the five-game series against his former team, drove in two of Detroit’s runs.

Angels-Yankees, postponed: The rained-out game is scheduled to be made up with a day-night twinbill Thursday at Yankee Stadium. Games are scheduled at 10:05 a.m. and 4:05 p.m. PDT, but more rain is forecast.
