Serena skips practice

Serena Williams skipped her scheduled practice session at a tournament Eastbourne, England, as the 23-time Grand Slam champion prepares to make her return to competitio­n after being injured in the first round of Wimbledon last year.

Williams, 40, trained at a nearby club over the weekend and was expected to have an on-site session at Devonshire Park ahead of playing doubles with Ons Jabeur. Their first match is set for Tuesday against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marie Bouzkova.

Soccer: The Poland soccer federation said it has informed defender Maciej Rybus that he is out of the national team’s plans for the World Cup in Qatar after he signed a contract with Russian club Spartak Moscow. Poland has cut sporting ties with Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.

Rybus has played 66 times for Poland and was on the squad for the last World Cup in 2018 and last year’s European Championsh­ip. He has spent almost all of the last decade at various Russian clubs and is married to a Russian woman.

⏩ Ryan Giggs resigned as head coach of Wales, saying he didn’t want his upcoming trial on charges of domestic violence to destabiliz­e the national team heading into its first appearance at the World Cup since 1958.

The Manchester United great has been on leave from his post since November 2020, with his assistant, Robert Page, guiding the Welsh to the World Cup in Qatar via the European playoffs this month.

Basketball: After a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the SF Bay Area Pro-Am League has returned. Games are set for 8 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion, usually Monday through Thursday.
