Chun cards 66 to lead Women’s British Open

In Gee Chun of South Korea took lead at the Women’s British Open after a 5-under-par 66 in the second round on Friday at Muirfield, Scotland, putting her in position to challenge for a second major title of the year, and fourth overall.

Chun had an 8-under total of 134, putting her one shot ahead of South Africa’s Ashleigh Buhai and Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom, who both shot 65.

Seven-time major winner Inbee Park, also of South Korea, was a shot further back after a 67.

Chun, who won the Women’s PGA Championsh­ip at Congressio­nal in June, carded six birdies and a solitary bogey in her round at Muirfield.

Overnight leader Hinako Shibuno carded a 73 to fall four shots off the pace.

⏩ Kim Joohyung “Tom” Kim overcame his rough start — a quadruple bogey on his first hole Thursday — with a 6-under 64 on Friday that gave him a share of the lead with Stanford alum Brandon Wu and Ryan Moore in the final PGA Tour event of the regular season, the Wyndham Championsh­ip in Greensboro, N.C.

⏩ Padraig Harrington made a long eagle putt on the final hole for a 6-under 64 that gave him a one-shot lead over Kirk Triplett in the PGA Tour Champions’ Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta.

Soccer: The San Jose Earthquake­s have signed defender Carlos Akapo, who has played with Cadiz in Spain’s LaLiga since 2019. The deal runs through the 2023 season with a club option for 2024. Akapo, a free agent, will occupy an internatio­nal roster spot.

Frances Tiafoe, the No. 10 seed, beat eighth-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Topseeded Andrey Rublev rallied in a second-set tiebreak to beat Maxime Cressy 6-4, 7-6 (8). He next faces American wild card J.J. Wolf, who beat Holger Rune 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. American Sebastian Korda advanced to the quarterfin­als by beating fifth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

On the women’s side, fourthseed­ed Victoria Azarenka beat Tereza Martincova 7-6 (7), 6-2, and sixth-seeded Kaia Kanepi got past Anna Kalinskaya 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3.

⏩ Rafael Nadal withdrew from the upcoming hard-court tournament in Montreal because of the abdominal injury that caused him to pull out of Wimbledon ahead of the semifinals.

College basketball: Stanford forward/center Fran Belibi is one of 11 players vying for six spots on USA Basketball women’s U23 3-on-3 team. The team will play in the fifth edition of the FIBA 3x3 Nations League in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, beginning next Saturday.
