Joan “Jody” Ginsberg
May 3, 1950 - October 18, 2022
Passed away October 18, 2022 in San Leandro, CA. Jody, a prolific artist and political activist, was born in New York City, and grew up in Wilton, Connecticut. Her early interest in art led her to Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, NY, where she obtained a BFA in Drawing and Painting. After graduation, she moved to San Francisco where she continued with her fine art painting. In 1983, she met Vincent Genovese, who she would marry in 1987. In 1985, Jody and Vince moved to Maryland for 10 years to help care for Vince’s ailing parents. While in Maryland, Jody joined the award winning Envisions Group, a high-end graphics company for corporate clients, where she began her career as a successful and well-respected graphic artist. Jody and Vince returned to California in 1995, first settling in San Anselmo and then in San Leandro. Jody continued her fine art painting as well as her career as a freelance graphic artist.
While always focused on progressive politics, in 2008 her interest turned towards political activism, initially campaigning for Dennis Kucinich in his presidential run and then for US Congressman Jerry McNerney. She continued working for progressive candidates and causes. She was able to combine her art and progressive politics when she joined the California Labor Federation as an organizer and graphic artist. Jody retired in 2021. She continued to create art through painting, drawing, and other media. Much of her art focused on the human condition, touching various current controversies. Always a lover of dogs, Jody contributed to many charities aiding senior and rescued dogs.
Jody is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Vince; beloved sister Caren Ginsberg of Rockville, MD and beloved brother Steven Ginsberg (Katharine) of Fairfax, VA, adoring niece Alexandra, and nephews Michael, Maxwell, and Rodion; and many, many cherished friends.
