Penguins top Maple Leafs; Capitals rout Lightning

Brock McGinn and Jake Guentzel scored in the third period, helping the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins top the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Friday night.

Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, which earned its second straight win since its seven-game slide. Jason Zucker also scored, and Casey DeSmith made 28 stops.

William Nylander and Zach Aston-Reese scored for Toronto in its second straight loss. Erik Kallgren made 19 saves.

This year’s class for the Hockey Hall of Fame — including Daniel Sedin, Roberto Luongo, Daniel Alfredsson and the late Herb Carnegie — was honored before puck drop.

Henrik Sedin also is set to be enshrined Monday, but is recovering from a bout of COVID-19 and wasn’t in attendance. Capitals 5, Lightning 1: Washington’s Darcy Kuemper got the best of visiting Tampa Bay again, making 28 saves against the team he beat for the Stanley Cup last summer when he was with Colorado. Sonny Milano scored twice and Anthony Mantha and Aliaksei Protas each had a goal for Washington.

Briefly: The Blue Jackets announced that defenseman Zach Werenski, the team leader in ice time, will miss the rest of the season because of a separated shoulder and torn labrum suffered Thursday. The team also placed defenseman Nick Blankenbur­g (broken ankle) and forwards Sean Kuraly (upper-body injury) and Jakub Voracek (upper-body injury) on injured reserve . ... Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette has been placed in COVID protocols and will miss Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay . ... The NHL and its players’ union announced that there will not be a World Cup of Hockey in 2024, but that efforts continue to resume the tournament in 2025.
