Stanford falls short against Wisconsin

Tyler Wahl scored 17 points as Wisconsin defeated Stanford 60-50 on Friday night at American Family Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers.

Jordan Davis had a career-high 13 points and Chucky Hepburn added 11 to help Wisconsin (2-0) win the first college basketball game at a baseball-only facility since a 2015 matchup between San Diego and San Diego State at Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres.

Brandon Angel scored 14 points to lead Stanford (1-1), which was 1-for-16 from 3-point range.

Wisconsin led 32-20 after a first half in which Stanford missed all nine of its 3-point attempts and had nearly twice as many turnovers (12) as baskets (seven). Wisconsin had an 18-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first half.

Stanford cut Wisconsin’s lead to 45-40 with 8:22 left but shot 2-for-11 from the floor the rest of the way.

Kansas State 63, Cal 54: Keyontae Johnson scored 16 points and Marquis Nowell added 13 with a momentum-changing fourpoint play late in the game to help the Wildcats turn back the Bears in Berkeley.

Cal (0-2) closed to within 47-46 on a layup by Sam Alajiki with 5:37 remaining in the game. Nowell responded with a fourpoint play and a layup in a 6-0 run and the Wildcats stayed in front from there.

Devin Askew finished with 17 points to lead Cal, but he also had six of the Bears’ 22 turnovers.

#1 North Carolina 102, College of Charleston 86: Armando Bacot had all but one of his 28 points after halftime to help the host Tar Heels push past the Cougars.

#2 Gonzaga 64, Michigan State 63: Drew Timme had 22 points and 13 rebounds, and led the Bulldogs in a spirited comeback from a 12-point deficit to a victory over the Spartans on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln at North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado (San Diego County).

#3 Houston 81, Saint Joseph’s 55: Jarace Walker scored 23 points and the visiting Cougars overcame a slippery floor to beat the Hawks in the Veterans Classic.

#4 Kentucky 77, Duquesne 52: Antonio Reeves scored 18 points, CJ Fredrick added 14 and the host Wildcats ran away from the Dukes.

#7 Duke 84, South Carolina Upstate 38: Freshman Kyle Filipowski had 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double in two games, and the host Blue Devils blew out the Spartans.

Temple 68, #16 Villanova 64: Damian Dunn drew a foul on a driving layup with 1.1 seconds left and made both free throws as Temple beat the Wildcats, sending the Owls’ fans into a court-storming frenzy at Liacouras Center.

Utah 72, Cal State Bakersfiel­d 44: Gabe Madsen scored 25 points, making 6 of 9 3-pointers, and the host Utes cruised past the Roadrunner­s.
