U.S. women snap 3-game losing streak

Mallory Pugh scored the goahead goal in the 56th minute and the U.S. women’s soccer team avoided a fourth straight loss with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Germany in Harrison, N.J.

Sophia Smith also scored for the top-ranked United States, which went into the match with its first three-game losing streak since 1993.

• Alejandro Garnacho scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 Manchester United win over Fulham in the English Premier League . ... Aston Villa recovered after allowing a goal in the opening minute to earn its first away victory of the season, beating Brighton 2-1. Motor sports: Chased to the end by Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, a tearful George Russell won his first race in Formula One by 1½ seconds at the Brazilian Grand Prix. It was also Mercedes’ first GP win of an otherwise disappoint­ing season. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. completed the podium.

Tennis: Switzerlan­d won the biggest prize in women’s team tennis for the first time after Belinda Bencic completed a nearperfec­t tournament by beating Australia’s Alja Tomljanovi­c 6-2, 6-1 in the Billie Jean King Cup final in Glasgow, Scotland.

• In Turin, Italy, Rafael Nadal’s bid to win one of the few titles missing from his career started poorly as he was beaten by eighth-seeded Taylor Fritz 7-6 (4), 6-4 in their opening match at the ATP Finals.
