South Carolina-Stanford showdown will be 1 vs. 2

It’s official: Sunday’s showdown between defending national champion South Carolina and Stanford at Maples Pavilion will be No. 1 vs. No. 2.

After topping the preseason poll, the Gamecocks (3-0) remained the unanimous choice as the top team in first regularsea­son Top 25 women’s basketball poll Monday from the Associated Press. The Cardinal (4-0) stayed at No. 2.

Sunday’s game, which will be telecast on ABC at noon, will be the 63rd meeting between the top two teams and the seventh in November. The last 1-2 matchup was also South CarolinaSt­anford, with the host Gamecocks beating the Cardinal by four points last Dec. 21, rallying from an 18-point deficit.

“I call it a win-win. Because no matter what happens in the game, you’re gonna learn more about your team, people have to do the right thing,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “It’s sort of like a tournament game, I mean, 1-2 matchup, it’s awesome.”

#5 UConn 83, #3 Texas 76: Azzi Fudd scored 22 of her careerhigh 32 points in the second half as the host Huskies (2-0) beat the Longhorns in an early topfive showdown.

#12 Indiana 79, #11 Tennessee 67: Mackenzie Holmes (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Grace Berger (13, 10) had double-doubles to lead the visiting Hoosiers (3-0) over the Volunteers (1-2), who previously lost to No. 8 Ohio State.

#14 Virginia Tech 79, S.C. Upstate 24: Kayana Traylor scored 17 points as the host Hokies (3-0) set the school record for fewest points allowed.

#21 Oregon 83, Southern 46:

Endiya Rogers scored 14 points — all in the third quarter — for the host Ducks (3-0).

Santa Clara’s Heal honored: Santa Clara guard Tess Heal was named the WCC Freshman of the Week. The 5-foot-10 Australian had a combined 44 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists as the Broncos split two games.

MEN Baylor coach Drew picks up 400th win

LJ Cryer scored 20 points, Adam Flagler had 13 points with 10 assists and fifth-ranked Baylor beat Northern Colorado 9562 for head coach Scott Drew’s 400th victory with the Bears (3-0).

Drew is in his 20th season at

Baylor, where he took over a decimated roster and scandalpla­gued program with only four NCAA Tournament appearance­s that had been ranked for only two games out of 2,197 over the previous 97 seasons.

#3 Houston 83, Oral Roberts 45: Tramon Mark scored a career-high 23 points for the host Cougars (3-0).

#25 Texas Tech 64, Louisiana Tech 55: Kevin Obanor and De’Vion Harmon each scored 15 points for the host Red Raiders (3-0).

WCC honors: Guards Brandin Podziemski of Santa Clara and Aidan Mahaney of St. Mary’s were named the WCC Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respective­ly.

Podziemski, a transfer from Illinois, had a combined 64 points and 20 rebounds as the Broncos swept two games. Mahaney, who’s from Campolindo­Moraga, opened his college career with a 25-point night in the Gaels’ 78-70 win over Oral Roberts on Nov. 7. He leads St. Mary’s (3-0) in points per game at 12.3.
