Stephanie Costello Lally June 19, 1938 - November 3, 2022

Stephanie was a native of San Francisco who died peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by her cherished family. Survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Bart C. Lally MD, her three sons, Bart (Amanda) and their children Francis and Marygrace, Jeffrey (Carrie) and their children Ryan, Cole and John, and John (Tina) and their children Katherine and Dean.

She is also survived by her four siblings, Joanne Milani, Timothy Costello, Christine MacInnis, Kevin Costello, and many nieces and nephews.

Stephanie attended grammar school at St. Monica’s and St. Thomas Apostle. She was a member of the pioneer class of 1956 at Mercy High School and went on to graduate from St. Mary’s College of Nursing at the University of San Francisco. Her career as an operating room nurse commenced in St. Louis, continued at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA, and extended over 50 years until her retirement. She was well-respected by many nursing and physician colleagues.

Stephanie and Bart raised their family in Saratoga, CA where she was very active in the community. She was a member of the Summit League and the Junior League of San Jose. She was the first woman to be appointed to the Board of Regents at Bellarmine College Preparatory. Stephanie (Steph) had a wonderful group of friends from San Francisco, St. Louis, Saratoga, and Los Gatos.

She loved spending time in her garden and was an avid reader, always sharing her books and ideas with her family and friends. Stephanie was happiest reading the latest book on her porch or near the ocean at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in Hawaii. Steph created a beautiful family home where friends and family were always welcomed, and many wonderful events from birthdays and baptisms to weddings and momentous occasions were celebrated. Most recently, Stephanie was by the side of her beloved husband Bart at his retirement party.

A devoted Irish “Gran” to her grandchildren, Steph knew everything going on in their lives and participated whole heartedly and with great pride in their accomplishments. She has left an empty space in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

The burial will be private with a memorial mass celebrating Stephanie’s life on November 18, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. 219 Bean Avenue, Los Gatos, CA, 95030. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, Steph would love for you to donate to a cause that is close to your heart.
