GOP takeover may not lead to abortion ban
Regarding “A national abortion ban dangerous” (Open Forum, Nov. 15): The writers contend that if Republicans gain control of all three branches of government in 2024, a national ban on abortion may ensue. This is the kind of misleading hyperbole that distracts women from addressing this issue before state legislatures.
These writers assume that Republicans will win the House, Senate and presidency; that a majority of Republicans want to legislate a ban on abortions (and thus commit political suicide); the filibuster is ended and the Supreme Court is prepared to change the position it announced in Dobbs (abortion should be an issue decided by each state).
A majority of women don’t want completely unrestricted abortion. Women form at least one-half of the electorate and are the most motivated. I suggest we let Democracy do its job.
