The day after news broke that tech giant Amazon planned to lay off 10,000 employees, the Bay Area felt the effects, with the company telling state regulators it planned to cut 263 jobs at its Sunnyvale locations.

In a separate filing, San Francisco-based software company Asana said in a filing with the state and the city that it planned to lay off 97 employees.

An emailed statement from an Asana spokesperson said the cuts would impact 9% of its workers globally as part of a restructuring plan to make the company more efficient. “We are supporting our departing team and remain so grateful for each person’s contribution to Asana,” the statement read.

The cuts are the latest to roil tech and other industries. Last week Meta, formerly Facebook, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees 11,000 of them would no longer have jobs with the company, as ad revenue has slowed and bets on the metaverse have yet to pay off.

And San Francisco’s Twitter continues to fire employees, after its new owner Elon Musk reportedly axed half the company earlier this month.

The layoffs at Amazon will affect mostly technical jobs, with hardware developers, data scientists, machine learning experts and software developers all among the roles that will be cut.

The New York Times reported Monday that Amazon’s layoffs would affect its human resources, retail and device-making sectors.

Amazon did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.

The layoffs will be effective as of Jan. 17, the report Amazon filed said.

“Affected employees who are separated as a result of this action will be paid all wages and other benefits to which they are entitled (if any) through their date of separation,” as long as they do not resign, the company wrote.

It was not clear if those employees would be kept on into next year or laid off and paid severance and benefits into next year.

Asana wrote in its filing that for laid off employees Tuesday would be their last day, and that they would receive 60 days of pay and other benefits.
