St. Mary’s men stay unbeaten

Center Mitchell Saxen had game highs of 17 points and nine rebounds as St. Mary’s remained unbeaten with a 72-54 rout of Southern in Moraga on Wednesday night.

The Gaels (4-0) owned a 42-23 edge on the glass. They also had four other players score in double figures: Aidan Mahaney had 16 points, Alex Ducas 14 (Mahaney and Ducas each hit four 3-pointers), Logan Johnson 11 (with six assists) and Kyle Bowen (10).

The Jaguars (0-3) play at Cal on Friday night. The Gaels host Hofstra on Saturday.

— Steve Kroner #3 Houston 83, Texas Southern 48: Marcus Sasser scored 20 points and Jarace Walker added 19 to help the host Cougars rout the Tigers.

J’Wan Roberts had 10 points for Houston, which shot 52%. The Cougars (4-0) forced 18 turnovers, which they converted into 21 points. Houston also held a 50-24 advantage in points in the paint and dished out 19 assists on 31 made field goals.

Zytarious Morlte scored 15 points, and Davon Barnes and P.J. Henry each added nine points for Texas Southern (1-4). The Tigers shot 37%.

#9 Arkansas 71, South Dakota State 56: Ricky Council scored 19 points in the host Razorbacks victory.

Arkansas (3-0) used a 10-2 run over the last two minutes of the first half to build a double-digit halftime lead, an 11-0 run early in the second to build it to 22 and another 10-0 run midway through the second half to cement its control of the game.

#20 Michigan 91,

Pittsburgh 60: In New York, Jett Howard scored 17 points and the Wolverins (3-0) beat the Panthers (1-2) in the Legends Classic.

#22 Tennessee 81, Florida Gulf Coast 50: Olivier Nkamhoua and Josiah-Jordan James each scored 18 points for the host Volunteers (2-1) against the Eagles (2-2).

Devo Davis scored 13 points for the Razorbacks.

Women

#7 Iowa State 88, Northern Iowa 85: Ashley Joens scored 26 points and Stephanie Soares had 23 to help the Cyclones (3-0) survive a scare in their first road game.

Emily Ryan’s 3-pointer with 2:03 left gave Iowa State an 86-85 lead after the Panthers (2-1) had erased a 13-point deficit early in the fourth quarter. Ryan added a jumper in the lane 48 seconds later to extend the lead.

#10 North Carolina State 96, Charlotte 48: Madison Hayes and Jada Boyd each scored 15 points for the host Wolfpack (4-0) against the Eagles (2-1).

#13 North Carolina 93, South Carolina State 25: Destiny Adams had 23 points and Alyssa Ustby added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the host Tar Heels (3-0), who led 32-1 after one quarter.

#15 LSU 101, Houston Christian 47: Angel Reese had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the host Tigers (4-0), who scored 100-plus points for the fourth straight game.

#19 Maryland 70, Davidson 52: Diamond Miller scored 19 points and Abby Meyers added 14 as the host Terrapins (3-1) downed the Wildcats (1-2).
